Dining
What’s cooking in Oceanside? There’s something to please every palette. Here are a few favorites of the locals.
101 Cafe
When you’ve been serving up comfort food everyday since 1928, you’ve got to be doing something right. This is the oldest restaurant in Oceanside, and is named after the historic Highway 101 it’s located on. Old timers will gladly tell you that the great burgers and milkshakes are one of the reasons this community staple is here to stay. Be sure to try the homemade carrot cake and cobbler while you’re at it.631 South Coast Highway, 760-722-5220
Johnny Mananas
If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, Johnny Mananas is the place to be. Pull up a table inside next to the local surfers and fishermen or grab a seat on the patio for some great people watching. Then indulge your taste buds with an oversized breakfast burrito or piquant roasted chicken. Or try the Pescado Veracruz, fish marinated in lime juice and garlic. Johnny’s is just three blocks from the beach and two blocks from the Civic Center and Art Museum.308 Mission Avenue, 760-721-9999
Harbor Fish & Chips
This family-owned, Oceanside Harbor landmark has been serving up tasty batter fried fish and chips since 1969. The ambience is fun and casual, and you can’t help but be impressed by the huge display of mounted fish and historic fishing photos on the walls. Be sure to try the homemade tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, and fresh coleslaw dressing – all come from the original recipes developed by Sally McWha, whose commercial fishing family started the restaurant way back when.276 Harbor Drive South, 760-722-4977
Killer Pizza From Mars
